The mighty oak... Conclusion
Before cutting the tree down, Vince had asked us if we wanted the wood for our fireplace. Since there's no known danger of spreading the disease from smoke, we said sure. It's always nice to get an unexpected supply of wood for the winter and it should be aged nicely by the time we need it. He asked if Lew wanted him to split it and my goofy husband... much to his regret now, I'm sure... said, "nah, just throw it over the fence, I'll do it." I'll bet he's rethinking that decision!
So they took a couple of rails off the fence for ease of transfer from one yard to the other and deposited the trunk pieces on our side as they cut it up. So now we have this huge pile of wood ... picture huge circles of tree trunk about 18 inches long...that has to be moved pretty quick or it will kill the grass. Ha! I don't expect to see Lew for the next 6 months!! It'll take him that long just to get it shifted over to the woodpile. Do you have any idea how much wood there is in one tree trunk?? No branches, mind you, just the trunk... one huge 15,000 pound trunk? Oh - my - God!! The man will be splitting wood for the rest of his life!
Oh, and that's not all... that black walnut I told you about? The remains of it are sitting in our driveway! *sigh*

Just for the record, the oak is off the grass and the grass is still green. About half the walnut ahs been moved from the driveway. AND it will be a lot of splitting!
That's a lot of wood. We had a hurricane over ten years ago and we still have a very little bit of that wood left!
Glad to hear it's off the grass :)
take care,
Dawn
