The ugly revisited...

*sigh* Well, two weeks later the refrigerator issue has reared its ugly little head once more. Last night it started blowing warm air again so that's it - we're just not gonna keep fooling with it.

Unfortunately, we can't get a new refrigerator delivered until May 25 (!!)
which means the next three weeks or so will be a real pita going up and down the stairs every time we need something cold. Aargh!!

I keep telling myself to look at the bright side, at least I have another fridge... but I'm still NOT amused!

Ravenous little beasts!

So, today was our annual termite inspection. Fortunately, there's no sign of any activity... for now. Howsomeever, it's probably only a matter of time before they rear their ugly little swarming bodies and decide to invade my kitchen again.

We've had issues a couple of times since the original termite treatment -- when the house was built -- expired. The first time we had to have the drilling around the perimeter of the house treatment, inside and out. About ten years later, we had to have a couple of spot treatments. So now, about ten years after that, it's coming time to do something again and I'll be damned if I'm going to let them drill holes in my brand new (well, almost) family room floor... just not gonna happen!

Soooo, the company wants to sell us a new bait system, which supposedly
is very effective and would eliminate the need to drill holes. Of course, the initial cost is up there, and the annual fee is about 4 times what we pay now. Arrrgh! So far, from what I'm reading on-line, I'm not terribly impressed. Looks like we have a lot of research to do before any signing on the dotted line. In the meantime, I'm hoping they'll find somewhere else to dine until I'm ready to serve my fare.

You know, sometimes owning a house is a real pain in the posterior!

Rabbit ears get reprieve...

Ah, jeez!
Just do it already! Haven't we had years to get ready for this questionable analog to digital decision anyway? Now we have to endure those obnoxious "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" commercials for another 4 months!

Aarrgh!

Full of it

I wanna know who the moron is who decided we needed to have 1.6 gallon toilets. It had to be some theorizing putz who never sat their butt on an actual pot. Some engineer-type who used an outhouse for all their elimination needs. I just know it was.

I want my old toilets back! I don't care how much water they used, dammit -- at least they worked! Over the years, we've replaced the two originals and added a third when we built a downstairs bathroom.
Every single one of them has required plunging waaay too often. Doesn't matter what the, uhmmm... composition... or quantity of waste matter is, the damn things back up just from sitting on them! What a useless waste of the water we're supposed to be conserving. Theoretically, of course.

You wouldn't believe how many discussionss there are in this house where the main topic is, well, poop!
Erg!

Aaaack!

Why do these things always happen at the most inopportune times?? Not that there's really an opportune time for the water heater to start leaking all over the basement floor, but c'mon, it's Christmastime, darn it! I got other things to do!

Lew does almost everything else around the house, but he's totally anti-plumbing. Soooo, we've got a call in to the plumber, and since they always overcharge when they supply the fixtures, I guess we'll have to fight the holiday traffic and crowds and go pick out a new one ourselves. Erg! In the meantime, he's draining the tank so we don't end up with a catastrophe on the newly-finished family room floor or carpet (the basement drain is located under the wall that separates the basement from the family room... but that's a story for another time.)

I
really can't complain, though. It's only the second water heater in 30-some odd years. The first one lasted 20-some years; this one 12. But still... the timing bites. I don't have time for this stuff!

Thomas Beatie, you are not...

... a man!! You're a man wannabe. You're a woman with male hormone injections who had your boobs removed... that doesn't make you a man. And it certainly doesn't make you a pregnant man! Men do NOT get pregnant, it's against the laws of nature. Regardless of what a judge determines. Pregnancy is exclusively a female phenomenon. There is no such thing as a pregnant man... period.

Gah, I just cannot wrap my brain around this one. Seems to me the lady wants it both ways. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but let's get real here.
If she was so hell-bent on being a male, then why hang on to her female reproductive parts? Because her 'wife' had a hysterectomy and couldn't conceive?? Oh, puh-leeeese!! I just can't accept that illogical logic. Methinks the lady enjoys the FEMALE pleasure of being pregnant.

Anyway, weren't her 15 minutes of fame up with the first baby?? God, I can't stand media spin!!

Gah!

What is wrong with this podunk part of the state I live in!! I swear, sometimes it feels like we live in some undeveloped, backwoods burg isolated from the rest of the entire civilized world!

I have these neat little kitchen gizzies that I use when baking potatoes. I don't what they're called -- potato nails, spikes, whatever -- but they look like this
and work just great. Potatoes take less time to bake, and come out nice and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

I have six, but thought it would be right convenient to have a few more for those times (like now) when I'm stocking the freezer with baked potato items and want to bake more than six potatoes at a time. Now, the whole rest of the country can find these NORMAL, everyday items at their local grocery store,* right? Or, at the very least, at their local Wal or K Mart, right? Ha! Not here in Frederick County!

Poor Lew ran all over town
looking for some today, and I do mean ALL OVER -- Giant, Safeway, Bloom's, WalMart, KMart, Target, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, a couple of department stores, and even the Dollar Store -- and nada. Zilch. Zero. Nothing. Some gal wanted to sell him bamboo skewers instead.

Aarghh!

*which is where I got the ones I have to begin with!

Why bother?

Well, that was hardly worth the effort it took to get the stupid thing in the mail! Our stimulus rebate from Uncle Sam arrived today, in an amount less than half of what their letter (and our calculation) said it would be. Without getting into the wisdom of the whole idea to begin with, what a waste of government man hours, paperwork, postage... and my tax dollars.

Sure glad we weren't depending on it for anything... it's not even enough to stimulate the gas tank!

Moronic mentality

Well, I've joined the rest of the country in the battle with insurance company morons who think they know more than doctors. Mine refused to cover the MRI my doctor ordered for my leg and insisted I get an ultrasound instead.

So, in addition to an X-ray, which apparently showed nothing serious, I got the ultrasound yesterday and, of course, guess what? Everything's hunky dory, no blood clots, and the blood flow is "beautiful," according to the tech. While that's all good news, and getting an ultrasound was a neat, new experience for me, it still doesn't address the issue of my mega-painful leg and the misery I'm in because we still don't know what's wrong or how to treat the damn thing! Plus, I'll still have to get an MRI at some point and now they'll be paying for two tests instead of the one my doctor ordered in the first place!

Aarrgh! Stupid should definitely hurt!!

In the meantime, the good doctor put me on a different painkiller, essentially Tylenol w/codeine,
which really isn't doing much, and I'm still one hurting puppy... about ready to rid my body of it's painful appendage or slit my throat, whichever comes first!

"Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink..."

"A boil water advisory issued Sunday could last at least seven more days after manure spilled into the town's water supply this weekend, according to officials..."

The advisory was issued because a pipe broke in a manure lagoon on a nearby farm. (A manure lagoon is a storage site where animal waste is kept in liquid form until it's used as fertilizer.)

After the pipe broke Friday, a pump continued to work, causing manure to leak into the ground and eventually into the water supply via a nearby creek. Another spill occurred on Saturday during the clean up.

Wonderful. One would think, after the fiasco in '99,* that this county of
farmers and livestock... and therefore, lots of manure... would have found a better way to safeguard this small town's water supply. But, nooooo, let's just keep pumping waste into the water supply!

Arggh! No wonder people call Frederick countians a bunch of Frednecks!

Needless to say, it's become a royal pita to remember not to use the readily available, but contaminated, tap water. You have to stop and think before you do so many of the little things we take for granted - like make a pot of coffee, cook dinner, freeze ice cubes, rinse a dish or spoon, brush your teeth, rinse your toothbrush, and on and on and on. We've laid in a small supply of bottled water but that'll get costly real quick - even the cats are drinking the bottled stuff.

Last time we had to schlep into town, on specified days, and fill a limited number of whatever containers we had from tanker trucks until they laid a temporary pipeline from Frederick city. I sure hope we don't have to do that again. :(

*While building...(a housing development)... nine years ago, a blasting company set off several charges that ruptured a sewer main and spilled 900,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the town's water system. The spill happened on June 18, but was not discovered until June 21... (because the morons who blew it up neglected to inform anyone about their screw-up!)

For five months, residents had to rely on Frederick city for water. The two municipalities were connected through a temporary pipeline along the roadway.

*EDITED TO ADD* - 5:20 PM

This is NOT sounding good at all. I understand this spill is majorly worse this go 'round - said manure lagoon held upwards of 5 million gallons of waste! Oh.My.God!

Another blurb from the newspaper:

"The town will again receive water from an outside source, Chad Gavitt, public information officer for the county health department, said. An above-ground pipeline connected to the county's water supply is under construction.

The pipeline could be in place for several weeks, he said.

The spill is not only affecting town residents.

The health department shut down all food service establishments in town until they can show they have additional safe water sources, Gavitt said.

An estimated 10 to 15 restaurants were affected by the shutdown.

Local schools remained open because they had other sources of water, he said. However, swim practice and a meet were canceled Monday for the High School swim team, said the coach of the boys team.

Day care centers, nursing homes, gas stations that serve food and grocery stores were notified of the advisory, he said.

The health department has received no reports of residents being sickened by the contaminated water, Gavitt said."

*SIGH*
