Christmas meme-ing

Several versions of this have been making the rounds in blogland so it's time I played along.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

until recently, only wrapping paper, but gift bags are looking better and better every year, especially for those odd-shaped gifts

2. Real tree or artificial?
for years we did real, but I got real tired of the mess so now we have a pre-lit artificial tree

3. When do you put up the tree?
sometime after Thanksgiving and before Christmas

4. When do you take the tree down?
usually the first weekend after New Year's

5. Do you like eggnog?

I do, with a splash of rum and sprinkle of nutmeg

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
hmmmm, probably because I remember it most, a grocery store set with little boxes and cans of food and stuff - totally loved it!

7. Hardest person to buy for?
that would be hubby dear, unless it's clothes

8. Easiest person to buy for?
my granddaughter - soooo easy!

9. Do you have a nativity scene?
yes, actually two, but the one I use most has cute, child-like figurines

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?
preferably mail, but sometimes email comes in right handy...

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
that would seem ungrateful now, wouldn't it??

12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
the original Christmas Carol... or It's A Wonderful Life

13. When do you start shopping?
I try to shop throughout the year

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
I don't think so - kinda tacky unless it was an heirloom or something

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
I like it all, but probably the sweet stuff best

16. Clear or colored lights on the tree?
colored, but I'd like to try clear sometime

17. Favorite Christmas song?
O Holy Night

18. Least favorite holiday song?
Grandma Got Run Over by A Reindeer (stupidest song ever!)

19. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
both - this year we'll be home

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?
Angel

21. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?
yes, though I often forget poor Dasher

22. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?
Christmas morning - Christmas Eve just doesn't seem right

23. Favorite ornament?
hmmm - probably the one I call "mama bear" - a white and red flocked bear with a lacy red front; it looks especially pretty next to a red/pink light

24. Do you have an ornament theme or color?
not really a planned theme, though our tree is kind of sugarplum-ish with lots of toys and sugary sweet things

25. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
the overwhelming commercialism and advertising that starts before Halloween now.

Friday Fill-Ins

1. October means the heat comes on, flannel sheets come out, it's Halloween, and the critters are busy getting ready for winter.

2. Guns in a home scare me!

3. Leaves are falling all around, it's either fall or you got yourself some sick, diseased trees!

4. My favorite horror movie is hard to think of because I'm just not into them that much. I prefer plain ol' scary movies without the gore.

5. Family and grandkids = good memories.

6. It was a dark and stormy night so I made a fire, snuggled under my favorite throw, and read a good book.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to chicken pot pie for dinner, tomorrow my plans include maybe a drive for a fall photo shoot, and Sunday, I want to watch the Redskins kick the Eagles' butt!

A little mid-week humor...

This week's theme is Cowboys...go here for more giggles.

Yeah, buddy - I have got to get me one of these for my next cowboy party! A real bargain for only about $75 US dollars!
(Kind of gives the phrase, "horse's ass" a whole new meaning, doesn't it?)

Or maybe I'll save my pennies for a quick trip up to NYC to see the Naked Cowboy, the street performer who prances around Times Square in nothing but his guitar and undies!

Cowboy Humor

A cowboy from Texas goes to Australia for a vacation.
There he meets an Aussie farmer and starts talking.

The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says,
"Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large."

Then they walk around the ranch a little and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately says, " We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows."

The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. "And what are those?" he asks.

The Aussie asks with an incredulous look,
"Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas?"

More than anything, Bob wanted to be a cowpoke. Taking pity on him, a rancher decided to hire the lad and give him a chance.

"This," he said, showing him a rope, "is a lariat. We use it to catch cows."

"I see," said Bob, trying to seem knowledgeable as he examined the lariat. "And what do you use for bait?"

Cowboy Quotes

Old Cowboys Never Die
They Just Smell That Way!

Never Squat With Your Spurs On!

There never was a horse that couldn't be rode;

Never was a cowboy who couldn't be throwed.

Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.

Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.

A smart-ass just don't fit in a saddle.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence,
try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Cowboys talk low, talk slow, and don't say too much.
John Wayne

Have a great hump day!! :)

Camera Critters - Dinner time

More Camera Critters can be seen here.

Moving in for a bite...

Yummm... good stuff!

Okay, got seconds?

I was able to get a nice series of shots when this little lady paid us a visit earlier this week. I was surprised she got so close - she must have been really hungry. Had it not been for the rickety ol' fence, I'm sure she would have been in our backyard munching on my azaleas!

Camera Critters - Chubby Robin

More Camera Critters can be seen here.

Sitting at my computer as I do, I have a pretty good view of our back yard, and so see a good many various critters flitting, creeping, or flying about.

This handsome fellow came for a visit and very nicely hung around long enough for me to catch these shots of him from inside using the zoom.

Right before he flew away, he flew up on the bench and ruffled his feathers in preparation for take off.

Camera Critters - Balancing Act

I caught these shots a couple of weeks ago of one of the stray beasties who hangs around our yard. I think it's trying for a better vantage point to survey the squirrels it chases.

Camera Critters - Groundhog Crossing

For more photo links, look here.

We've had at least one resident groundhog hanging around for years. This day it was ambling across the yard to an auxiliary burrow entrance (in my azalea bed!) when a stray cat went into hunt/stalking mode. The groundhog reached safety and the cat sat staring at the hole until it got bored with the whole thing and went off to chase butterflies.

Camera Critters: Sleepy ducks

Came across this meme in my travels 'round the Internet and thought it might be fun to play. For more photo links, look here.

These little fellas caught my eye as we strolled along Carroll Creek park promenade the other day. (As part of a flood-control project, the creek runs in a waist-deep, manmade concrete channel.) I thought snoozing ducks would make a cool photo, but as I was taking the picture, the scene really got funny.

With heads tucked in, they'd drift for a minute or so until the movement of the water brought them to the edge. Then, they'd poke their heads up, paddle back to the middle, get all tucked in again, and drift back over to the edge. I can't count how many times they did this, over and over again, and I don't see how they got much rest since the whole process took about two minutes, but it sure was fun to watch. :)

Photo Hunt - Glass

Theme: Glass

I was going to use this DC building photo for last week's "high" theme but got sidetracked and neglected to post. I think it works well for this week's theme too, so it's doing double duty - high glass! ;)

Back in the day, we typed the old-fashioned way - on a manual typewriter... with paper.
This trusty ol' Remington portable has been sitting in its case, in my garage for decades - about 35 yrs. The keys were covered in white mold, but as you can see, amazingly it still works - even the ribbon still has ink in it!

With its sticky keys, messy ribbon, bell to let you know you reached the end of a line, and manual carriage return, it's a far cry from the keyboards we now use, but we got the job done. There's still a lot to be said for old-fashioned technology.
